Understanding Delay Variations on Internet Paths

چکیده
In this paper we investigate the network factors that may affect the user perceived end-to-end delay jitter. In particular, we identify the following three major factors: per hop queueing delay variations along an Internet path; intra-domain multi-path routing; and inter-domain route (i.e., AS path) alterations. By studying traceroute data collected on Internet paths, we find that 1) larger queueing delay variances are likely to be experienced at routers residing at boundaries of (or rather, links between) two (AS) network domains as well as the edge of the Internet; 2) intra-domain multi-path routing may have significant impact on end-to-end delay jitter; and 3) inter-domain route alteration adversely affects user perceived delay jitter. In this paper, we report on these results and discuss their implications in network engineering.

Characteristics of Network Delays in Wide Area File Transfers
In this paper we present an analysis of over 236,000 file transfers between 10 widely distributed Internet hosts. The goal of this work is to broaden the understanding of how network path and congestion properties contribute to delays in TCP file transfers. The first part of our analysis investigates how end-to-end path properties (eg. physical distance, router hops, autonomous system hops, or ...
متن کاملTriangle Inequality and Routing Policy Violations in the Internet
Triangle inequality violations (TIVs) are the effect of packets between two nodes being routed on the longer direct path between them when a shorter detour path through an intermediary is available. TIVs are a natural, widespread and persistent consequence of Internet routing policies. By exposing opportunities to improve the delay between two nodes, TIVs can help myriad applications that seek ...
متن کاملAssessing the service quality of an Internet path through end-to-end measurement
Understanding the service quality of Internet paths is of great importance for both the service provider and the user. Motivated by this and particularly the aim of extracting such information from a given dataset collected through end-to-end measurement, this paper presents a novel approach, called SCI (Service-quality Characterization of Internet-path). Specifically, SCI utilizes delay and lo...
متن کاملFrom BGP to RTT and Beyond: Matching BGP Routing Changes and Network Delay Variations with an Eye on Traceroute Paths
Many organizations have the mission of assessing the quality of broadband access services offered by Internet Service Providers (ISPs). They deploy network probes that periodically perform network measures towards selected Internet services. By analyzing the data collected by the probes it is often possible to gain a reasonable estimate of the bandwidth made available by the ISP. However, it is...
متن کاملOn Spectral Analysis of the Internet Delay Space and Detecting Anomalous Routing Paths
Latency is one of the most critical performance metrics for a wide range of applications. Therefore, it is important to understand the underlying mechanisms that give rise to the observed latency values and diagnose the ones that are unexpectedly high. In this paper, we study the Internet delay space via robust principal component analysis (RPCA). Using RPCA, we show that the delay space, i.e. ...
